I'm Sorry

Hurt.

I have seen people hurt one another a LOT over the years. I have seen hurt, be it intentional or accidental, divide families… churches… businesses… nations. I have seen how the division caused by a misplaced word or an outright attack, has seemingly won.

The ‘enemy’ must be gleefully rubbing his hands together devising ways to further that divide, spreading it like a wave over the beach. Careless words are so often behind so much of that hurt. The Bible says we are to be judged for every careless word (Matthew 12:36). But in the mean time, it separates friendships and teams and families and churches and the list goes on.

But why?

Why can’t a person who has hurt another just apologise?
Why can’t they just say “I’m sorry… my careless words/actions caused this division and I want to make it right.”
Why is pride stronger than friendships and families and churches and nations?

Pride won’t laugh with us when we have a funny story to share.

Pride won’t be a listening ear when we just want to talk.

Pride won’t accompany us when we are scared to face something or someone.

Pride won’t be beside us when we are lonely.

Pride costs more than it gives.

Pride keeps us separated.

Hurt divides and pride locks the door behind it.

I don’t mean the sort of pride one has in their child when they say their first word or takes their first steps. I mean the sort of pride that keeps you in bondage with your mistakes. The kind that imprisons you with your failures… when you could simply lay them at the feet of Jesus, say you are sorry and have those relationships that the enemy has stolen, restored.

So what is the solution?

How do you break down that pride?

How do you soften the hurt?

How do you repair broken relationships?

What will bring friends, families, churches, nations together?

Humility.

Grace.

Forgiveness.

If you have hurt someone, say you are sorry. Humility. If it was an accident, own it. If it was intentional, repent for it. If someone comes to you to say they are sorry, forgive them. Grace. If it hurt you, let them know. But then let it go. Forgiveness.

Humility, Grace and Forgiveness

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:12-14
Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Colossians 3:13
